So I was reading Game of Thrones earlier, I’m about 350 pages in now, and I can just feel the foreboding pain that lurks at the end of the book and as the series goes on (I spoiled some stuff about the Starks on accident) and I was reading the part about the tournament when Loras Tyrell, the “Knight of Flowers” was jousting, and I started wondering.
Why don’t people make fun of this guy? I mean the Knight of Flowers? He wears flowery armor and cloaks for goodness sake! He’s supposed to be a manly knight! But they just praise him and act like he’s the best thing to grace the land since trees! It makes no sense!
Especially Sansa (who’s also engaged and really shouldn’t be swooning over some other dude anyway) this is one of those times where I just wanted to smack her and be like
(I don’t like Sansa much as you can see, at least not right now, she might get better as she grows up)
But if I met a dude and someone introduced him as the Knight of Flowers this would be me:
I’m just going to ignore the Sansa remark for the moment, and move on to Loras
Loras’ appearance is very clearly based upon Chaucer’s ‘Squire’ in one of his Canterbury tales, The Knight. He is described as being fair and slight, with roses on his clothing and always dressed well and caring a great deal about his appearance. It wasn’t something to be looked down upon— merely a product of his time.
Not to mention Loras Tyrell is a TYRELL. Their house Sigil is a Rose and those born down in the Reach without parents receive the last name Flower.
I’m all for making fun of Loras— I probably do it more than anyone else. But making fun of his ‘Knight of Flower’ I don’t think really factors in with these people, because, you know… it’s not considered ‘unmanly’ to dress according to your House sigil and given it’s a different society
Besides, who says flowers have to be unmanly? Loras is one bad-ass motherfucking warrior
